BIO
Rocky hails originally from western Maryland, where he grew up in Hancock on the banks of the
historic C&O canal and the Potomac River.   His relationship with wood began when he learned
carpentry and he has spent the better part of his working life in the construction industry
building or remodeling everything from homes to scientific labs to military barracks.   He
moved to Tucson in 2006 when his wife took a position at the University of Arizona.   Rocky
is now a licensed Arizona contractor and owns a handyman/remodeling business.
Although he showed artistic talents early in life, it was not until moving to Tucson and
building a spacious workshop that Rocky began turning bowls out of local woods which he
either finds or rescues.   He quickly learned to let the wood “speak to him” in creating
his unique bowls.   He particularly enjoys the challenge of working with eucalyptus, a wood
with a beautiful red hue that shapes itself after he turns it.   He has also fashioned bowls
out of the honeycombed skeletons of cholla cactus.   Rocky is a member of the Southern
Arizona Arts Guild and has exhibited and sold his bowls and other woodcrafted items at
local galleries and shows.
